Every makeup artist knows that good makeup starts with skincare and as we age, looking after your face becomes more and more important. In the run up to a big event like your wedding day, you definitely want to start thinking about your daily and nightly routine and consider what works for you and what might need a refresh to ensure you’re looking and feeling your best on the big day. All product recommendations are suggestive, feel free to do your own research and find out what works for you.

General feel good rules from your hair & makeup professionals:
1. Drink at least 2 litres of water per day

2. Get as much sleep as possible

3. Use one clay mask and one hydrating mask per week, leave a few days in between. Use when your skin looks dull and congested (clay) or feels tired and dry (hydrating)

4. Never sleep in your makeup and remove wipes and highly perfumed products from your routine, don’t use anything that feels tight and uncomfortable on the skin after application

5. If anything causes a reaction, stop using it immediately. You can claim a refund on any product that irritates your skin as long as you let the brand know you’ve had an allergic reaction, take a photo and email their customer service dept

6. When applying serums and creams, always start with your eye cream (think of it like your bra, everything else goes on top) then apply the rest of your products using the ‘thinnest to thickest’ principle.

7. Always wash your face in the morning. You may wake up like a glowing goddess not wanting to remove last night’s skincare but trust us, your skin will thank you for starting fresh.

8. Don ‘t forget your SPF! Even on a cold day in the UK the sun’s rays are strong enough to damage our delicate skin

For your night routine:

Always double cleanse to remove makeup and clean skin. For your first cleanse use a micellar water on a cotton pad or similar. There are a lot of micellar waters and micellar oils available on the market from more affordable brands like Garnier to artist favourites, Bioderma. For your second cleanse use a cleansing lotion or milk and wipe away the remaining makeup with a hot cloth. Recommendations include, Soap & Glory Peaches & Clean Cleansing Milk, Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish, Elemis Cleansing Balm & The Inkey List Oat Cleansing Balm

Don’t forget your eye cream, some of our favourites are the Inkey List Caffeine Eye Cream as well as their Retinol Eye Cream, the Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Eye and La Roche Posay Hydraphase Eye.
If you’re into the Hayley Bieber glazed donut glow then you may want to include an overnight serum for resurfacing, anti-aging and anti-pollution, do you research beforehand to ensure it’s the right serum for your skin needs but for multi-purpose serums we like Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair, Kiehls Midnight Recovery and Sunday Riley Juno/Luna.

Night Creams are different to day creams as they’re often thicker and have more regenerating properties. Some of our favourites are Medik8 Night Ritual, Clarins Multi-Active Night, Elemis Midnight Facial and REN Evercalm.

For your day routine:
First cleanse your face with a gel-foam cleanser such as the Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip, Ren Gentle Cleansing Gel or the Glossier Milky Jelly Cleanser .
Pat your skin dry and if you like, apply a toner. Again, toners do lots of different things but for a daily, healthy glow vitamin C toners will brighten and refine your complexion. We love Caudalie Vinopure, Ren Ready, Steady, Glow and the OG, Pixie Glow Tonic. We wouldn’t recommend using a resurfacing toner every day, so find one you like and use it on rotation with another or use it every other day.

Eye cream morning and night as above.

Then finish with your SPF and moisturiser, some of our tried and tested pre-makeup moisturisers are Embryolisse Lait-Creme Concentrate, Kiehls Ultra Facial Cream, Clarins Multi-Active Day, Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base and Aveeno Daily Moisturising Lotion.
